Jen Nerbonne

For State Representative District 35

I am committed to being a true advocate for the people of South Kingstown, listening to all perspectives and working diligently for every constituent. With over 4,000 bills submitted last year alone, it’s clear that not every aspect of our lives needs government intervention. Legislation should be straightforward and practical, serving the best interests of our town.

Our community is full of educated and innovative individuals with valuable ideas. Government should reflect this—by the people, for the people. My focus will be on making governance accessible and effective, ensuring that our laws and policies enhance our quality of life without overcomplicating it.

Together, we can ensure that our government remains responsive and aligned with the needs and values of South Kingstown.

Vision, Issues, & Values

My vision for South Kingstown focuses on four key areas: Affordability, Education/Parental Rights, Environment and Land Use, and fostering a Business-Friendly environment. Our community includes retirees, young families, long-term residents, and local business owners.

Many families are struggling to make ends meet, grappling with high costs for necessities like food, utilities, and gas. The upcoming $150 million bond presents uncertainties regarding its impact on state and town taxes and property values. New families are finding it increasingly difficult to afford homes, and many younger residents can’t find affordable rentals. As a result, some families are selling their homes out of concern about their ability to retire here.

We must return to basics in our schools by emphasizing core subjects like math, reading, writing, and science. We need to engage with teachers to understand their needs and provide the support necessary for them to succeed.

We need to increase opportunities for parental engagement in schools through regular meetings and feedback mechanisms. We can support parental rights by ensuring transparency in school policies and decisions.

In environmental stewardship, rather than focusing on banning items, we should prioritize preventing pollution at its source. Implement stricter regulations on sources of pollution and promote community-wide initiatives for sustainability.

Develop and enforce policies to protect and preserve the shoreline is crucial. We need to involve local stakeholders in decision-making processes ensuring that our beaches remain accessible to all residents. Additionally, decisions about the future use of empty schools should be made with the best interests of our community in mind.

I will work on policies that make South Kingstown more attractive to businesses, such as streamlining permit processes, offering tax incentives for small businesses and removing senseless regulations.

I am a strong proponent of term limits, encourage fresh perspectives and prevent long-term entrenchment of incumbents as South Kingstown has been governed by the same candidates for too long. We need to increase transparency in government decisions and hold public officials accountable to ensure that policies benefit all residents. According to Go Local Prov, Rhode Island ranks last for “Business Environment,” 40th for “Business Costs,” and 21st for “Access to Resources.” We need to drive meaningful change across all these areas.

Using data to guide decisions and evaluate the impact of policies is crucial. We must consistently review and refine our strategies based on measurable outcomes. Additionally, establishing open communication channels with residents is vital for understanding their needs and gathering feedback on our initiatives.

Addressing these challenges requires collaboration with a range of stakeholders, including community members, local businesses, educators, and policymakers. By focusing on these core areas, we can work towards building a more affordable, equitable, and thriving South Kingstown.

I firmly believe in term limits and South Kingstown has been ruled by the same candidates for way too long. According to Go Local Prov, RI is ranked last for “Business Environment”, 40th for “Business Costs and 21st for “Access to Resources”. We need to effect change in all areas.
